While I certainly agree with Ginger's assessment in principle, I must respectfully disagree with Ginger's last statement: "....[WTO] an idealistic dream much akin to socialism." Socialism, in theory, is a philisophical, ideological, sociologivcal construct. The WTO is merely a scheme by megacorporate interests to solidify power, control, and profits to its constituent corporate interests. To elevate its description to that of an "idealistic dream" insults everyone who has ever had an idealistic or altruistic thought. Socialistic theories lay out utopian ideals for society; the WTO is just pure unmitigated greed.

Re: [tradeforum] RE: Inequality and WTO
Your question "Do you think so?" Have "central planners" government or any
bureaucracy for that matter ever been able to "control" ANYTHING fairly or
equitably, cost effectively, better than private enterprise, especially if
left alone without fetters? No. It's an idealistic dream much akin to
socialism.

Re: [tradeforum] RE: Inequality and WTO
Folks,
since the WTO is in current events, I thought I'd share this direct quote:
In a message dated 10/23/00 9:26:19 AM, Jean-Guy.Carrier@wto.org writes:
<< The WTO does not bring free trade but it does
impose a set of rules under which trade can be conducted openly and fairly. >>
so their job is not free trade, but "fair trade". An naturally, this can be
achieved by rules devised by central planners. Do you think so?
