Patents, following A Case In Point

Folks,

One of the most controversial points I make in my class is that intellectual
property rights are a waste of time and money and pointless at the small
business level. Now apparently, IBM agrees with me, at the BIg Business level.

This news started in the New York Times, and of course is racing around the
world. USA loses export market share in categories that are protected by
patents, such as high tech. With patents, marketing skills wane and USA
managers are not up to snuff when we compete overseas. IBM sees this now.

I suspect because IBM has so many foreign born managers who understand how
economics really works, that they have reached a critical mass and have
persuaded management to change direction.

Of course, those indoctrinated to believe patents are good will expect IBM to
falter and they will dump their stock. When this process is finished, I for
one, plan to buy IBM, and short microsoft, who I expect to lose in this game.

A Case In Point

Re: [spiers] A Case In Point

I think the idea here is "when you have a lighted candle, why would you want to
deny someone else the ability to light their candle from yours and take it to
another room you don't care to go into, or another place you cannot get to?"

Why would you want to give your product innovations away to others? So they
can make the big money? A new idea can on an old product can be very
profitable. Nobody is a limitless fountain of creativity, so run with your
ideas.
