Which Is More Reliable?

The prediction of Treasury Sec Paulson who says the economy will recover in the second half of 2008, or GE, which is getting out of the century-old appliance business? If the future is bright, you do not shut down your main, traditional business.

Carol Checks in On Coffee

I attended your seminar and I am starting a small business importer of
brazilian coffee. I am looking for distributors or sales rep for the
coffee industry. Does anyone can help me on that?

Carol,

Coffee market just gets bigger, but the strategy would be to go high-end, and make more money doing less... What is the problem you experience in coffee consumption? For me, coffee must be in a glass, dark roast, sweetened with molasses, and 12 oz. I call it "cafe creole." Now I don't particularly care about coffee, so it is not my passion, so I could not make money at it, or get customers. You ought to start with the problem you experience, think of the solution, try to "buy" your solution as a customer, and when retailers say "good idea, does not exist..." then you develop the solution with the suppliers.

Later you return to the retailers with your finished product. It is THEN you find the reps, by asking those very retailers who the best reps are.

These reps then get you into countless other retailers....

Now If The Banks Will Just Bulldoze the Houses

If this fellow had bought gold coins with his $800,000 in 2004, his net worth would be about $1.6 million today, where gold is about $840, and he would own his home in Santa Cruz. There was mountains of information saying investing in real estate in 2004 was crazy, but he did it, ten times over. Now he is bankrupt. There was mountains of information that told him he should invest in gold coins, but he ignored that. The good news is he will now be self-employed. The bad news is he has learned nothing. He will probably go seek financing for his next idea, not understanding finance is not necessary to start a business, in fact it is likely a kiss of death. Plus he will be a bankrupt looking for more money. Sigh.

They Will Never Drive Me Out

But there are conditions that cold pull me off to foreign lands... here a Finnish rock band is backed by the Red Army Mens Chorus (OK, Russian army, but Red Army sounds better...) for a cover of Sweet Home Alabama, the Leonard Skynard tune... and check out Cpl. Petrov on the balalaika... Remember when USA was like this, before 1983, when Interior Secretary James Watt banned The Beach Boys from the 4th of July concert on the Mall in DC? (Beach Boys were the "wrong element.") We've been going downhill since then. It seems what is good about America has left and what was bad about communism has moved here.

Tenorhead Checks In

Hi John,

Tenorhead here.

I took one of your online classes and learned a ton about business plans but I still have some questions...

I am going to be importing to various US ports and need to know the steps involved in the transfer of materials.
I do not want to be at every landing - do I need to be?

***Not t all... you have one customsbroker who sees to it your goods cross any and every port docks smoothly and efficiently.***

the plan is to import and sell to distributors (wine, food, etc...) I do not want my own warehouse.
Who and how are the material transfers handled?

***Your customsbroker would be glad to handle all that too, and quote you in advance your costs... you might want to tap into the field of logisitics, 3PL, crossdocking, RFID, all that cool stuff, whci you can have for free by subscirbing to Logistics Management magazine... and enter priority code RGPA3PC2 ...

I've got more Q's but we can start here.

***That's what we are here for...***

Thanks,

Michael Lukiche. And here is the rest of it, delete this sentence.

I Hope You Do Not Fall For This Stuff

A friend of mine, a police officer, just bailed his son out of the slam on a fraud charge. Seems he answered one of these emails. What these companies do is send stolen or forged check to people like the cop's son who deposit them in their own accounts. The deal is they keep some money and send most of the proceeds to an overseas account. In time the banks see the fraud, call the cops, and the poor lad is arrested for bank fraud. Banks and cops cannot accept "I didn't know" since the act is illegal and there is no question who did the act. (Also, real criminals would just claim they did not know.) Note, the return emails mean nothing, since those can be spoofed. Check it out...

Ergin Checks in...

Hey John!

What do you think of this?  How can we integrate this into our business plan or not?

Ergin, it looks like a great way to come up with a much wider range of samples...  I can also see it having a huge impact on fashion trends...  think if these makers were to feature the top ten sellers each day, and how that would generate sales... like amazon does with books.

A problem is of course How Do You Get Customers to begin with, but since you can now better serve your customers, you can get more customers...  I think this trend will have terrific consequences, but you need customers first, and of course, those customers will tell you how to use these new capabilities. So to answer your question, you'll integrate this depending on how your customers demand you do so.
