Online Marketing

I am a big disbeliever in marketing over the internet, especially SEO, so when I come across something that seems to disagree with my point of view, I like to highlight it.  And here is a fellow selling posh car mats over the webs...  check it out.

I don't know why you are against Internet marketing. My business combines Internet marketing with direct mail and it is profitable. Internet marketing is just a brand of direct marketing, and we know that direct marketing is an effective marketing channel.

I am not against internet marketing, I am against wasting money. I do not doubt that your business is profitable. You syllogism breaks down, but let me cut through: can you demonstrate I would make money (that is net profit) marketing on the internet. With 15 years of asking, the answer is "no, can't be done." So for me, it is not viable, something I am sure is true of almost all small businesses.

I would make a distinction between selling to businesses (b2b) and selling to consumers (b2c). If your business is b2c, then I would agree: selling over the Internet definitely is not profitable. But if you are a b2b wholesale, which I believe you to be, then I would expect you to be able to draw new customers and retain existing customers with an online catalogue / shopping cart website for wholesale purchasing. You are fortunate to be in the US, where you have access to a vast network of independent sales reps ... but in smaller economies, the importer / wholesale will have difficult finding these people. That is where it is useful and profitable to have an online ordering system through the website along with some very targeted keyword advertising with Google search. This is definitely profitable, as long as you are using your website to market to businesses rather than consumers.
