There is money to be made feeding lies to a demanding audience. I do not pay attention to westerners talking about factory conditions overseas because in my experience they simple do not understand what they are looking at, or make the stories up. One such fellow lied spectacularly and duped government TV and countless audiences around the world. The compelling stories he tells are not true, although presented as factual experiences.
In spite of admitting to telling lies, he still bills himself as a NYTimes master storyteller, and with kudos from magazines who fell for his lies.
It does not matter that he has proven to be a liar, he continues to fill theatres.
People need to believe the lies, I suspect, if for no other reason, than they can ignore their own complicity in the USA wars of aggression on Libya, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Yemen, Afghanistan and who knows where else. It is easier to disdain Apple computer than to object to criminal wars.
MSNBC, a Microsoft joint venture has been particularly keen on promoting Mike Daisey's lies. Microsoft really ought not push nonsense about its competitor over their government-subsidized airwaves.
In spite of the fact that Daisey presented lies as fact, The Seattle Rep will continue to offer his performances and the Cornish School of the Arts will award him an honorary degree. Cornish explains Daisey's lies are about and understandable confusion. Perhaps predictable gullibility, but certainly not understandable confusion. People desperately need to believe lies, and even when proven a lair, they will stick by the liar, to hang onto the lies.
The New York Times finally did take apart his lies, and one point a NYTimes writer notices is cheap labor is not a factor in int'l trade. Imagine that. Yet they still do not understand what they see. With either the capitalist or communist orientation, their world view forbids understanding what they are seeing. Only a free marketer could explain what is going on. There are no free market people in the mainstream news media, since there is no free market in mainstream news.
As whistle blowers like Private Manning rot in jail for revealing the truth, The Seattle Rep and Cornish and countless others reward and subsidize a notorious and intentional liar.
