Re: Problem with Fashion

In a message dated 10/16/01 8:23:44 AM, student writes:

Product: My father owns an Auto Parts in Puerto Rico and he would like to
obtain a line of tires (new in the market and competitive in price and
quality: eg. something similar to Michelin in quality but competitive in
price), to distribute in Puerto Rico. He says the demand for tires is
excellent. I have been doing some search through the internet but with not to
much success (I guess). That's the reason I am taking this course. Since you
mention in class that the product should be unique, do tires are not a good
product? What will be the disadvantages, if any?

For thought assignment you said to think about any product we would like to
trade. I LOVE Fashion, I have experience in the area working for boutiques,
I studied modeling, my sister was Miss PR Petite and Professional model and
was involved in most of his activities. Also had the opportunity to buy
merchandise in New York @ The Fashion Avenue, for a boutique in PR. However,
I am conscious fashion is a very volatile market. I really want to start my
business but don't have a specific unique idea and that's what I need. What
do you suggest?

<< If you do not care about tires, you will never be competitive.

What do you mean? (Maybe it is my English)

***there is much work in bbusiness, if you do not care about an item (tires)
you will not do the work necessary to be competitive.***

there are companies in USA that make inexpensive tires.

We meet with a company in Miami that they say the manufacture tires. During
the meeting we discovered that they manufactured in different parts of the
world (Germany, China, etc.) It seems we were taking with the distributor and
we wanted to deal with the manufacturer. That's why we were searching in
China.

***china sells to distributors because distributors buy one million tires.
Will your father buy one million tires?***

If you LOVE fashion, why bother with tires? There are people who LOVE

tires, let your father work with them.

He does not speak English and there are a very few people in my town how does
it. So, he is hiring me to do so.

***I have traded with china for years, there are many many chinese who speak
spanish, so language is not a problem. the problem is can you buy enough
tires to make selling them to you worth the chinese time?***

But besides my father I would love to trade any other product.

what problems in fashion need to be solved?***

The fact that it is a very volatile market - "easy enter...easy exit". How
can I do?

***All markets are volatile. Fashion is clothes. Clothes are not volatile
(unless you are Versace). What do you want to see happen in clothes for next
year?***
