Product bar code and textile material tag

More questions on textile material tags

Hello John and Everyone,
Yes, I'd like more info on the textile tags also. I am buying some textiles
from SE Asian craftspeople who, for the most part, do not speak English, so
I can't ask them to make to fabric content and country of origin tags for
me.

Is there a source here in the states where I can have tags made and then
provide them to my craftspeople to attach to the textiles? Must the tags be
made of cloth and sewn in or can they be made of paper and attached with a
cloth or plastic tagging barb (the kind you find on most clothing in
department stores)?

Ditto on desiring a website or more info on the textile tag requirements.
Thanks in advance for any advice or info. -Janet

Product bar code and textile material tag

Hi John and friends,

Regarding product bar code, it is advantage or required to get them for new
products? I heard that some customers requires them in order to do business
with them. What is the thought on this and where do you register for them? Is
there a website?

Another question is with the tags on textile goods such as stuff animals,
pillows, and beddings. Do we need to register the product and the materials
used for these products? Is there a website where I can get more information on
this?

Thanks,
-don

has been importing pre-fabs from China for a few years now.***

Opening a bank account in Mainland China

RE: [spiers] Opening a bank account in Mainland China

I find some large US banks have branch offices in countries I trade with.
Citibank is one such institution that has served me well for years. Check
out this link for offices in China
http://english.qianlong.com/7838/2003/12/20/207@1775172.htm

Since Russia is mentioned, you may be interested to learn that Citibank is
the 11th largest bank in that country.

In dealing with China, i have always used Hong Kong banks, so China rules
don't apply... presently I am working on some products from China, so I
have
bought RMB¥ in advance, but that is a supplier holding those, not a bank.
In
this instance, it is critical, of course, that i have a god relationship.
But as
for having a bank account in a mainland chinese bank, that I have not
done.

In Moscow, on the other hand, they can't sign up foreignors holding
Russian
bank accounts fast enough.

Hi Jon,

In class you've talked about before having a local bank account (in the
country where you deal with the manufacturer). Do you or anyone else
know the deal with foreigners opening bank accts in China (pref.
Shanghai/Beijing)?....specifically what the options are and what's a
good bank if there are options.

THanks!

Tooling Cost

Re: [spiers] Tooling cost

To make production samples, factory quoted me few hundred dollars in
tooling cost. I remember you saying I could request this cost to be
paid later with orders? Could you explain that to me again? What was
the verbiage? Thanks!

***That would need re-explaining if I said that, because orders are not money,
so nothing can be paid with orders. I can imagine I would say that haviing
retailers who say "it is a good idea and does not exist" would either cause your
supplier to get on board with you, or cause you, given your passion for the
product, to be happy to pay any sample costs, if nothing else to have that which
you think will solve a problem.

Let's step back a bit... you have a variety of stores in your area that have
told you your product idea is good and does not exist, and based on this you
have found the best place in the world to have your product made? And this
factory wants you to cover tooling costs?

if so, then your supplier's requirement is either attractive or not. If not,
then back up, and get there.***

product with parts from 2 countries

Re: [spiers] product with parts from 2 countries

I'm contemplating of using a higher quality part of a product from
Europe. What is the most cost effective way to approach this? For
example, I'd like to produce a candle holder with an expensive candle.

***A very commoon strategy...***

Holders made in China, candles made in France. Should I:
1) Ship the parts to US and have it packaged here.
2) Ship candles to China and have them put the product together?

***the trick is to cost both scenarios and see which is best for the
consumer...***

In
this scenario, would my trading company in HK purchase the candles and
then have me reimburse later?

***that is often the case...***

What are other options?

***Limoges is a world renown mark. To legally be Limoges, the item has to
ceramics either fired or painted in Limoges France. Therefore, ceramics fired
in Limoges but painted in China can be sold as Limoges, or ceramics fired
overseas and painted in Limoges can also be sold as Limoges. Not sure how this
applies to your situation, but you may find it inspires innovation.***

Pick and Pack Operation

Re: [spiers] Pick and Pack Operation

the best place is where
all your competitors go to but I have no idea where the people in
the HOMEWARE industry go to. Any idea anyone?

***Check out the catalogs and price lists of your 'competitors" and see if there
is a pattern as to where they warehouse... it will be on the order form, under
"FOB" as in "FOB cherry Hill, NJ" or FOB Sparks NV"***

Oh and by the way, I tried speaking with a few fulfillment services
and they all come back telling me that I am too small-scale for
them. So should I be looking for a small company too?

***See, here, economy of motion... If the warehouses you checked were not the
ones your competitors used, why spend time talking to them? What made you call
these specific fulfillment houses, if they were not the ones your competitors
use? Take the extra time to fiind out where you should be, and then ask. this
way you'll get where you need to go faster.***

I am also
concern about locating it too far away from where I live because I
feel that it'll be too hard to keep an eye on things. I'd appreciate
any feedback! Thanks!

***Ah, the things you need to keep an eye on are product dev and markets...
competent people will keep an eye on the other parts. ***
